About Kumudini Shoba
Healer and teacher Kumudini Shoba traces her passion for Ayurveda through
a long line
of ‘Vaidhyas’ – Ayurveda healers – in her family.
Born in Sri Lanka into this dedicated tradition of healing through many generations,
the art and science of Ayurveda is literally in her blood.
Educated also in the Western scientific tradition, Kumudini completed a degree in science at
the University of London and went on to obtain a Master of Science degree in organic chemistry
from the University of Victoria, Canada. She then began a career in the US, working as a
research chemist in immunology for a biotechnology firm.
Before long, she realised that the age-old teachings of Ayurveda were just
as relevant to
modern life as in the past. She saw that applying its principles could help people in the West,
and in fact the world over, to reduce stress, improve their health and lead happier and more
productive lives. Leaving her career as a scientist, she went to pursue Ayurveda studies full-time
at the Ayurveda Institute in the US. Her passion for Ayurveda has since led her to devote her life
to serving humanity through this ancient science.
Kumudini sees her role as a bridge between cultures, bringing together
the best of ancient Eastern
and Western healing traditions and helping these to find a place in the lives of people all over the
world. Besides her deep knowledge of Ayurvedic nutrition and herbs,
Kumudini brings to her work
her understanding of Western herbalism and traditional Chinese medicine,
pioneering the use of
such herbs in the practice of Ayurveda. She is one of the few Ayurveda practitioners who have
such cross-disciplinary strengths.
She has also formulated a range of organic Ayurvedic herbal supplements
to restore and maintain
health and balance to daily life. These are available in convenient and easy-to-take capsules that
make unnecessary the tedious preparation and unfamiliar flavours associated
with herbal remedies
prepared the traditional way.
Now based in Seattle, USA, Kumudini Shoba has built a flourishing practice
as an Ayurveda
practitioner and is a leading teacher of Ayurveda in the West. Her clients range from CEOs and
directors of companies to people working in the arts and entertainment scene,
as well as the food,
computer and technology industries. Her clients are found in the US, Canada, Sweden and
Singapore. The broad spectrum of clients attests to her success, over more than 20 years of
practice, in translating the principles of Ayurveda into ways that support people through the
stresses of everyday life, enabling them to achieve greater self-understanding, better health and
balance in their individual physical, emotional and mental states.
Kumudini is a highly-respected teacher of Ayurveda. Some of her students have travelled thousands
of miles to attend her classes. Her seminars in the US and Canada on ‘Ayurveda – the Wisdom and
Spice of Life’ have drawn much interest among people from all walks of life.
She also conducts
Ayurvedic health care courses for other health care practitioners and has created an apprenticeship
programme to teach traditional Ayurveda in the United States.
